Prioritizing Home Visitor Safety: Strategies and Tools to Support the Home Visiting Workforce

The safety and well-being of home visitors are essential to sustaining a healthy, effective workforce. Research shows that home visitor safety concerns are associated with increased burnout, lower job satisfaction, and higher staff turnover—yet safety is often treated as an afterthought.

To help address this challenge, the Home Visiting Workforce Development project has released three new resources as part of the Home Visitor Safety Suite. Building on the research-to-practice brief, Prioritizing Home Visitor Safety, these tools offer practical strategies and actionable guidance to help strengthen safety practices across home visiting programs.

The following resources are now available to support both individual home visitors and organizations:

  • Home Visitor Safety Self-Assessment
A guided reflection tool that helps home visitors assess their confidence, preparedness, and experiences related to physical, psychological, professional, and organizational safety. The self-assessment encourages meaningful conversations with supervisors and helps identify areas where additional support, training, or resources may be needed.

  • Organizational Home Visitor Safety Checklist
A practical tool for supervisors, program managers, and organizational leaders to assess policies, procedures, and organizational practices that contribute to a culture of safety. The checklist helps programs identify strengths, gaps, and opportunities for continuous quality improvement.

  • Strengthening Home Visitor Safety: Process Maps & Decision Trees
A collection of adaptable process maps and decision trees that support consistent decision-making before, during, and after home visits. These examples can be customized to align with individual program policies, local protocols, and community contexts, helping teams respond thoughtfully to a variety of situations while promoting consistency across staff.
