Challenge Grant Spotlight: Partnership in Parenting Supports Maternal Well-Being
Partnership in Parenting (PIP) at Shiloh CUSD 1 in Newman, Illinois, received a $15,000 Parents as Teachers Challenge Grant to help combat maternal and infant mortality in Central Illinois. Through this funding, PIP is expanding its support for new mothers by promoting emotional well-being, reducing stress and strengthening connections among families.
One component of the initiative will provide new mothers with self-care baskets containing items such as journals, art supplies, exercise tools and breastfeeding supports, as well as gift cards for massage services. These resources are intended to encourage mothers to care for their own physical and emotional health during the postpartum period.
PIP also plans to host monthly peer-support opportunities, including Group Connections and “Moms Mingles.” These gatherings will combine parent education with refreshments, enjoyable activities and time for mothers to relax and connect with one another. To make participation easier for families, PIP will provide free child care and gas gift cards.
The grant will also strengthen the program’s ability to recognize and respond to families’ needs. Staff will participate in professional development focused on postpartum depression, suicide prevention, trauma-informed care and evidence-based home visiting practices.
PIP has already taken an important first step by hosting a Happiest Baby on the Block training presented by Prevent Child Abuse Illinois. PIP staff and mothers participated alongside staff from the Mattoon Home Visiting Program, creating an opportunity to learn together and build connections across programs.
Through practical resources, peer support and professional development, Partnership in Parenting is creating a more responsive network of care for mothers and babies throughout its community.
